Mark Andrew, MD
Dr. Mark Andrew joined the ReFocus Eye Health team with over three decades of clinical ophthalmology experience.
After graduating from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, subsequent rotations in the research department at Wills Eye Hospital led to Dr. Andrew being awarded an NIH grant and subsequently spending a year at the National Eye Institute of the NIH in Bethesda, MD, conducting ophthalmic research.
After attending the Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia for his Ophthalmology Residency Training, Dr. Andrew then joined a practice of Ophthalmology in Orange County, California, with offices in Laguna Hills and Irvine. Returning to the Delaware Valley, Dr. Andrew settled in South Jersey, becoming an associate of Dr. Reed Kindermann in Cherry Hill, as well as running his own practice of Ophthalmology in West Deptford and then Haddonfield.
Returning to his interest in research, Dr. Andrew invented and developed a novel way of removing cataracts, which he licensed to Alcon, Inc. That technological innovation, The AquaLase® Liquefaction Device, was incorporated as a modality of small incision cataract removal on The Infiniti Vision System, Alcon’s premier cataract removal machine used routinely in over 50 countries. Subsequently, Dr. Andrew modified the technology, enabling it to remove adipose tissue in a novel manner; that device was recently used in the First Human Clinical Trial in subjects with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes, where visceral adipose tissue was removed from the small bowel mesentery, a surgical first. Dr. Andrew holds 40 patents in 25 countries; his medical devices have received 6 FDA clearances.
